Questions
What building managers ask
How do I know the plumber is licensed?
The license line is in the footer of every page, with the board that issues it. Look the license up on the board's page, and ask us for a certificate of insurance.
What do I do first if a pipe bursts?
Close the nearest shutoff and, if you cannot find it, the building's main. Turn off the water heater, move anything that can be damaged, and call the service line. A dispatcher answers at any hour.
Where is the main shutoff in an older building?
Often in the basement on the wall facing the street, or in a mechanical room. The walk-through finds every main and riser shutoff, tags them and draws a map for your staff.
What does a visit cost?
Repairs are priced in writing before work starts. Visits under an agreement are in the agreement. The proposal says what is included and what is not.
Do nights and weekends cost more?
Yes. After-hours labor is billed at the after-hours rate, which we quote before we dispatch. Critical agreements bill nights at the regular rate.
Will I get a price before work starts?
Yes, in writing, for any repair that needs parts. The only exception is stopping the water and making the space safe, which is billed as time.
How long does a repair take?
A leak at a shutoff is usually one visit. Anything that needs parts or a permit gets a schedule in the quote.
Do you pull permits?
When the work needs one, yes. The fee is a line on the proposal, and the permit is closed out with the city or town.
Is this a main-line problem?
If drains back up on several floors or in several units, it usually is. A camera look finds out, and the findings go in the work order.
Could an older building have lead pipe?
Possibly. Many buildings built before 1986 have lead solder or older service lines. Your water supplier can say what the service line is made of, and we note what we find inside the building.
What does a camera inspection show?
The inside of the drain line: breaks, roots, sags and buildup, with the footage kept in the work order.
What is the difference between a service agreement and calling when something breaks?
The agreement fixes response windows, rates and scheduled visits in advance. See the service agreements page for the levels.
Which areas and hours do you cover?
Onondaga County and parts of Oswego, Madison and Cayuga counties. The service line answers 24 hours a day and the office is open weekdays, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Still have a question?
Ask on the form or call the service line.
